The Salon International de l’alimentation, better known as the SIAL or the Global Food Marketplace, is one of the biggest events in the food processing industry.
The SIAL first took place in CNIT (the Centre des Nouvelles Industries et Technologies) in Paris in 1964, moving to the Versailles Gate Exhibition Centre four years later when it grew larger and then to the North Paris-Villepinte Exposition Park (where it is still currently held) back in the 1980s.
The event first began at the urging of the French Ministry of Agriculture under the auspices of the General Confederation of the Retail Food Trade (Confédération Générale de l'Alimentation en détail). Attendees and exhibitors from over 26 countries participated in that initial event. These days, the event has spawned its own international network, with SIAL trade fairs now taking place in China, Canada, the UAE, the Philippines and Brazil.
SIAL Europe 2024 is set to be the grandest incarnation of the event yet. It will feature the modern incorporation of the former IPA trade show, which will join the equipment, technology and services section, alongside the manufacturers, suppliers and other industry professionals working in a diverse range of sectors, including:
Beverages, cured meats, tinned and preserved products, groceries, fruit and vegetables, food supplements, frozen foods, bakery goods, poultry and game, meat and wine. There are also several national pavilions and pavilions for different regions of the world and of France.
It's worth noting and applauding that the organisers collect around 50 tons of food to the French Red Cross every time the event is held. Future events are set to feature a heavy focus on sustainability
